Orchestra del Teatro Massimo
Scritto, diretto e interpretato da Charlie Chaplin, “Luci della città” è il film capolavoro del grande regista inglese e una delle pellicole più amate di sempre, caratterizzata da un aggraziato mix di comicità e denuncia sociale, densa di scene commoventi e gag esilaranti. Attentissimo anche all’aspetto musicale dei suoi film, Chaplin ne compose le musiche in collaborazione con Arthur Johnston scegliendo nel 1931, quando cominciava a imporsi il sonoro, di proseguire sulla strada del film muto adottando una tecnica mista: i personaggi non parlano ma una colonna sonora accompagna le loro azioni ed emozioni. “Se il film non piace” sosteneva, “il pubblico dovrebbe almeno poter chiudere gli occhi e godersi la musica”.
La colonna sonora restaurata e ricostruita da Timothy Brock è eseguita dal vivo dall’Orchestra del Teatro Massimo mentre sul grande schermo cinematografico montato per l’occasione sul palcoscenico viene proiettato il film. Tra musica e immagini rivive la storia d’amore dell’irresistibile vagabondo Charlot che, innamorato della bella e povera fioraia cieca (l’attrice Virginia Cherrill), riesce a guadagnare tra mille vicissitudini il denaro necessario per l’operazione che potrà restituirle la vista. Una storia semplice e commovente dietro cui si cela un messaggio più profondo. Il film si apre infatti sulla pomposa cerimonia di inaugurazione di una statua dedicata a “Pace e Prosperità” ma, addormentato sulla scultura, sotto il drappo che la rivela al pubblico, è proprio il vagabondo Charlot. Lo sdegno che si riversa sul poveraccio è al tempo stesso pura comicità e una denuncia dell’ipocrisia della società, un tema che Chaplin ebbe sempre caro e che esprime in tutti i suoi film.

«Ho cercato di comporre della musica elegante e romantica per incorniciare le mie commedie in contrasto con il personaggio del vagabondo – dirà Chaplin nelle sue Memorie – perché la musica dava alle mie commedie una dimensione emotiva. Volevo che fosse un contrappunto di grazia e charme, per esprimere il sentimento senza il quale un’opera d’arte è incompleta».
Sul podio dell’Orchestra del Teatro Massimo dirige un grande specialista di ricostruzione ed esecuzione di colonne sonore d’epoca come il direttore tedesco Helmut Imig che vanta tra le sue composizioni le musiche originali nello stile del tempo per i film di Ernst Lubitsch Lady Windermere’s Fan e So this is Paris e ha ricostruito la musica di Edmund Meisel per La corazzata Potëmkin di Ėjzenštejn per la Berlinale 2005.
In occasione della presentazione di “City Lights”, domenica 3 luglio sarà prolungato l’orario delle visite guidate a teatro (ultima visita ore 19:30) ed è previsto il biglietto ridotto per chi volesse associare alla visita anche il concerto/spettacolo.

Stefano Bollani, one of Italy’s most appreciated pianists and composer, will be at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, with his new Piano Solo Tour, on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 March 2025 at 9 pm.
