The Teatro Massimo Ballet
to perform in a new version of the well-renowned coreography by Coralli and Perrot
by Jean-Sébastien Colau
Palermo, June 10 2025. Giselle, the classic 19th-century ‘white ballet’ by Coralli and Perrot with music by Adolphe-Charles Adam, returns to the stage at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo from Saturday 14 June at 8 pm in a new version created by Jean-Sébastien Colau director of the Theatre’s Corps de Ballet with the collaboration of choreographer Delphine Moussin. The beautiful hand-painted sets of the new production are designed by set designer Francesco Zito with the collaboration of Antonella Conte and the lights by Bruno Ciulli, while the costumes are created by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, collaborating costume designer is Chicca Ruocco. On the podium of the Teatro Massimo Orchestra conducts maestro Nir Kabaretti. Runs until 20 June.
‘My version of Giselle,’ says corps de ballet director and choreographer Jean-Sébastien Colau, ’respects all the codes of romantic and classical dance. Together with Swan Lake, Giselle is the ballet I have danced and loved the most in my life as a dancer. I also danced it in Caracalla, when in 2008 I was called upon to interpret Albrecht by the great Carla Fracci, who signed the choreography to celebrate fifty years since the first time she danced it at La Scala in 1958 and then became the interpreter par excellence. I am very happy to propose the choreography today for the Teatro Massimo Ballet’.
A cornerstone of the Romantic repertoire, Giselle is a ballet beloved by audiences and a proving ground for great dance stars. The story evokes the Germanic myth of the Villi: nocturnal and ethereal spirits of girls who died for love. Like the young protagonist who, in love with the nobleman Albrecht, Bathilde‘s betrothed, is transformed into a spirit living in the forest. Welcomed by the Villi, led by Myrtha, their ruthless queen, Giselle enters a world where dance is the language of the soul. Distraught Albrecht pursues the ghost of Giselle with whom he has fallen in love, risking his life. The dancers, with their aerial presence, challenge him just as they do gravity, condemning him to dance to exhaustion and causing his death. But Giselle saves Albrecht from the mortal dance that awaits him by holding him close to the cross of his tombstone, and protecting him until sunrise, when she and the Villi vanish into darkness. The fog-shrouded set resounds with Adolphe Adam’s haunting score.

Ruolo ambito da ogni danzatrice, Giselle, eroina romantica per eccellenza, richiede oltre a qualità tecniche e stile, anche qualità attoriali per un ruolo drammaturgicamente complesso e articolato. Ad interpretarla, nei due cast che nel corso delle recite si alternano sul palco del Teatro Massimo, sono Martina Pasinotti e Yuriko Nishihara, tersicoree del Corpo di ballo del Teatro Massimo. Nel ruolo del nobile Albrecht sono in alternanza Alessandro Casà e Alessandro Cascioli. E insieme a loro, nei ruoli principali: Francesca Davoli e Francesca Bellone (Myrtha), Diego Millesimo e Diego Mulone (Hilarion), Simona Filippone (Berthe, madre di Giselle), Marcello Carini (Wilfred, amico di Albrecht), Annalisa Bardo (Bathilde, fidanzata di Albrecht), Vincenzo Carpino (Duc de Courlandes), Giulia Neri e Valentina Chiulli e Michele Morelli e Giovanni Traetto (Pas de deux dei contadini). Romina Leone e Annalisa Bardo (Prima Villi), Sabrina Montanaro e Debora Di Giovanni (Seconda Villi). Alessandra Bernier, Michaela Colino, Erika Melcarne, Jessica Tranchina(Amiche).
Il debutto del balletto è preceduto giovedì 12 giugno alle 18:00 in Sala ONU da un incontro di approfondimento a cura dell’Associazione Amici del Teatro Massimo che hanno invitato Vito Lentini a parlare di Giselle. Giornalista e critico di danza e balletto, Lentini scrive per Sipario ed è docente di Pedagogia del Corso di Diploma in danza classica e docente di Storia della Danza al Master in performing arts managment dell’Accademia Teatro alla Scala. L’ingresso è libero.
Venerdì 13 giugno alle 19:00 la prova generale di Giselle, sarà dedicata alla raccolta fondi a favore della Fondazione AIRC che quest’anno celebra sessant’anni di impegno a sostegno della ricerca oncologica indipendente. I proventi della prova generale saranno interamente devoluti al Comitato Sicilia della Fondazione AIRC presieduto da Michele Semilia, per finanziare la ricerca contro il cancro. I biglietti sono disponibili presso la sede di Palermo AIRC e dall’11 giugno presso la biglietteria del Teatro Massimo.
Dopo la prima di sabato 14 giugno lo spettacolo sarà in scena: domenica 15 giugno, ore 18:30 (Turno D); martedì 17 giugno, ore 18:30 (Turno Danza); mercoledì 18 giugno, ore 18:30 (turno C); giovedì 19 giugno, ore 18:30 (Turno B); venerdì 20 giugno, ore 20:00, (Turno F).
