“Palermo apre le porte. La scuola adotta un monumento” (Palermo opens its doors. The school adopts a monument) was born in the spring of 1994 from an idea of the then School Councillor of the Municipality of Palermo Alessandra Siragusa. These were the years immediately following the Mafia massacres and the project was conceived as an experience of urban pedagogy that could shake up the city through young people, stimulating the creation of a sense of civic responsibility and belonging to the community.

Girls and boys become privileged subjects for the affirmation of a new awareness of the cultural heritage, the historical-artistic heritage and, more generally, of their own city. Adopting a monument, in fact, means not only studying its history and making it known to passing visitors, but also rescuing that monument from oblivion and decay, taking care of it and promoting its enhancement.

Since 2005, the metaphor of “adopting a monument” has been expanded: the event is called ‘Palermo opens its doors. The school adopts the city’. City understood as a unicum where the monument is a symbol but is also the centre of relations that develop and grow around it. Thus, in addition to the traditional adoptions by schools, over the years historical and cultural walks, workshops and sporting, artistic or solidarity events have been added throughout the neighbourhoods of Palermo.
