The Symbolic Wheel

The Symbolic Wheel

The wheel overlooking the auditorium looks like a giant flower with eleven petals that, thorough a system of ropes, can open up to let the hot air out and ventilate the room.

Description of the wheel

The wheel is made out of eleven elements. Each element is painted, as is the central rod in which we can admire Luigi Di Giovanni's painting The Triumph of music, based on an idea by Rocco Lentini.
Di Giovanni is also the author of another trapezoidal frame depicting two women playing a lute and a tambourine.  On the three frames to the right (facing the royal box) there are three canvas by Ettore de Maria Bergler, depicting a cymbals player, a violinist with her back turned, and a winged figure with a clarion. To the left there are, instead, the four figures by Michele Cortigiani, of a darker color than the previous one. There are also three paintings in which prevails the blue of the sky punctuated by white clouds. Art Nouveau is the main inspiration that permeates the decoration of the theater. At that time Nietzsche wrote: "That everything heavy become light, that all body become dancer and all spirit bird". The eleven trapezoids plus the central Triumph for a total of twelve components. Twelve is the number of fullness and fulfillment, image of the space-time cycle.
Ubaldo Mirabelli - art historian and director of the Teatro Massimo for 24 years - once wrote: "Music claims itself as harmony, through the art of life and the art of the world. From germination to flowering, to the generation, the crawling and radiating desire is all a yearning for the beauty that is in music and harmony for music: an idea, a value presented on top of the auditorium to man and civil society ".
